Another Summer of Successful Camps at the Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center

Auburn, Ala. - This summer, the Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center opened its doors to hundreds of energetic and talented children, ages 4 – 17, participating in Visual Art, Musical Theatre, and Science Camps. These camps provided opportunities for children to engage in fun, educational activities that stimulate creative and imaginative growth.

New York, NY (August 1, 2012) — The best free ticket in town is just a click away - starting today, museum-goers can head to smithsonian.com/museumdaylive to download tickets for Smithsonian magazine’s Museum Day Live! Tickets grant free admission for two people per household to participating museums on Saturday, September 29, 2012.

 

Museum Day Live! will be the eighth annual event celebrating education through the nation’s wide array of museums and cultural institutions. For one day only, participating locations across the country will emulate the free admission policy of the Smithsonian Institution’s Washington, D.C.-based facilities. The program encourages learning and the dissemination of knowledge nationwide. Last year’s event drew over 350,000 museum-goers to over 1,400 museums.

Submissions sought for "The MLK Project"

Red Mountain Theatre Company (Birmingham, AL) and its Executive Director Keith Cromwell, in collaboration with Lee Sentell (Alabama Tourism Director) and Dr. Lawrence J. Pijeaux (President and CEO of Birmingham Civil Rights Institute) are hosting a national search for a one-act written piece to be produced in honor of the 50th Anniversary commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s historic “Letter from a Birmingham Jail.”

The one-act theatrical presentation (play, musical or spoken word) will become the second act of a fully-realized theatrical event that features a first-act dramatic reading of the “Letter to Martin Luther King” by a group of clergymen and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “Letter from a Birmingham Jail,” written during his incarceration in 1963. 

Submissions are due no later than September 1, 2012, and the winner will be announced on October 15, 2012.

Summer Invitational 2012 Exhibition and Reception

Summer Invitational 2012 Exhibition and Reception

The Auburn Arts Association is currently hosting the Summer Invitational 2012 exhibition, on display through Thursday, Aug. 30 at the Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center. The exhibition features photographs by David Hiley and ceramic works by Robin Duke Rodgers. The public is invited to a drop-in reception on Friday, July 13 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. to view the exhibition and meet artist Robin Duke Rodgers.

Rodgers' work is represented in private, corporate, and museum collections in the U.S. and abroad, including the Mobile Museum of Art, Huntsville Museum of Art, State of Florida, The Nature Conservancy, Historic Bok Sanctuary, Archaeological Institute of West Florida, Apalachee Indian tribe, and in art galleries across the United States. In May 2012, a piece of Rodgers' work was presented to King Juan Carlos of Spain during a visit by the Governor and Secretary of State of Florida.

The Lee County Historical Society presents 'The Forgotten Creeks of Alabama'

In keeping with its 2012 theme, “The Year of the Creek,” the Lee County Historical Society presents speaker Robert Thrower at 2:30 p.m. CST Sunday, July 8, at the Trade Center Museum in Loachapoka.  Thrower, Tribal Historic Preservation Officer for the Poarch Creek Indians, will discuss “The Forgotten Creeks of Alabama: Rediscovering the Poarch Band of Creek Indians.”

Thrower’s presentation will explore the origin, struggles and accomplishments of the Poarch Band, and a number of Creek cultural items will be on display for both discussion and demonstration.

Thrower is a Tribal Member of the Poarch Creeks and a direct descendant of the Wind Clan of the Upper Creeks of Alabama.

FREE Outdoor Summer Movie Series kicks off June 22

Auburn, Ala. - Got the summertime blues with nothing to do? Join Auburn Parks and Recreation for the BRAND NEW Outdoor Summer Movie Series, kicking off Friday, June 22 with a showing of the new family favorite, "Hugo."

Enjoy FREE movies for the whole family on select Friday evenings this summer at Duck Samford Park - Field 1 at 8:30 p.m. Admission is FREE to the public.

Moviegoers are encouraged to bring a blanket or lawn chair and a picnic (no alcohol or glass containers) and relax with the whole family. Food and beverages will also be available for purchase on-site.

Based on the Brian Selznick novel, The Invention of Hugo Cabret, "Hugo" is a computer animated feature set in 1930s Paris.
