Submissions sought for "The MLK Project"

Red Mountain Theatre Company (Birmingham, AL) and its Executive Director Keith Cromwell, in collaboration with Lee Sentell (Alabama Tourism Director) and Dr. Lawrence J. Pijeaux (President and CEO of Birmingham Civil Rights Institute) are hosting a national search for a one-act written piece to be produced in honor of the 50th Anniversary commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s historic “Letter from a Birmingham Jail.”

The one-act theatrical presentation (play, musical or spoken word) will become the second act of a fully-realized theatrical event that features a first-act dramatic reading of the “Letter to Martin Luther King” by a group of clergymen and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “Letter from a Birmingham Jail,” written during his incarceration in 1963. 

Submissions are due no later than September 1, 2012, and the winner will be announced on October 15, 2012.

Pangea to headline May concert series performance tonight

The May Concert Series continues today, May 24 with a performance by Pangea. This FREE, outdoor concert series features performances by local and regional musicians every Thursday at 6:00 p.m. at Town Creek Park. Grab your friends, some chairs, and a picnic and enjoy an evening of FREE musical entertainment.

The product of jam sessions and small gigs, Pangea formed in 2009 with a philosophy rooted in the belief that there are thousands of songs worth singing that bring people together and tell the truth about the human condition. With performances of familiar favorites such as "Love the One You're With" and "Down on the Corner," the band enjoys playing hits you know and love as well as songs that are new to listeners.

14th annual Juried Art Exhibition winners

The 14th Annual Juried Art Exhibition, presented by the Auburn Arts Association, is currently on display at the Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center. The exhibition features 40 local and regional artists, selected by Columbus State University Department of Art Chair, Joe Sanders. Works will remain on display through Wednesday, June 27 in the art gallery of the Arts Center. The public is encouraged to view the exhibition. Admissioin to tje gallery is free and open to the public Monday - Friday from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

In addition to selecting the displayed works, Sanders chose 10 artists to receive merit awards for their outstanding work. Merit recipients were recognized at a reception at the Arts Center on Friday, May 18.

The Auburn Arts Association would like to congratulate the following artists on their awards:

14th annual Juried Art Exhibition and Reception

The 14th Annual Juried Art Show exhibition is currently on display at the Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center. The exhibition features works by local artists on display now through Wednesday, June 27. The exhibit is free and open to the public Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Works from the exhibition have been selected for special recognition and will be announced at a reception honoring the artists on Friday, May 18 from 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. at the Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center. The reception is free and open to the public.

Jule Collins Smith Museum hosting AU Department of Art Studio Faculty Exhitibion

The Jule collins Smith Museum is hosting the Auburn University Department of Art Studio Exhibition through May 19th.

The studio faculty at Auburn University's Department of Art constitutes a vibrant community of artists and scholars who not only teach, but also are actively engaged in the production of their own art.

This triennial exhibition of current work by the diverse faculty highlights their wide range of creative pursuits and underscores the school's continuing reputation for attracting highly accomplished professional artists. The exhibition offers students, colleagues, and the community at large an "insider's look" at the significant creative activity taking place at Auburn.

Martha's Trouble headlines concert series on May 10th

The May Concert Series continues Thursday, May 10 with a performance by Martha’s Trouble. This FREE, outdoor concert series features performances by local and regional musicians every Thursday at 6 p.m. at Town Creek Park. Grab your friends, some chairs, and a picnic and enjoy an evening of FREE musical entertainment. This week, Kona Ice will be on-site selling icy treats for concert attendees to enjoy.

With a style best described as pop folk music with searing female vocals, Martha’s Trouble has been compared to the Cranberries, Cowboy Junkies, Natalie Merchant, Dar Williams, and Alanis Morissette. This husband-wife duo first hit the Houston music scene in 1994 and has been gaining momentum ever since, touring Canada and the Southeastern United States. With a host of albums to their name and an inspiring list of awards (including Americana Album of the Year at the 2005 Just Plain Folks Awards), this act carries a sizeable and ever-increasing fan base.
