City of Auburn Grants Trash Amnesty May 20-24

 

Auburn, Ala. - Spring cleaning doesn’t get much easier than during Trash Amnesty Week, set aside each spring by the City of Auburn. During the week of May 20-24, 2013, the fees normally assessed to Auburn residents for the collection of oversized yard debris and other bulky waste will be waived. Citizens are asked to pay close attention to the following guidelines when placing items out for collection:

Got ants?  Tired of ladybug invasions in the fall?  Brought home bed bugs from your last trip?  Alabama Cooperative Extension professionals will moderatre a free webinar series that will take on all of these topics.  In 2013, most of the webinars will be on fire ants and other invasive ant specias.  Other topics for the year include bed bugs and various insects that invade homes each autumn.

Alabama Extension entomologist Dr. Kathy Flanders says these free webinars are designed for homeowners and the general public.

"We will provide them wilth sound, research-based management solutions for these pests from some of the best experts around the country," she says.  "The webinars are specifically for ordinary people wno need answers they can use."

"Participating is as simple as clicking on a web link."

Each webinar will begin at 1 p.m.

Poarch Band of Creek Indians recognized for forestry achievements

AUBURN, AL - The Poarch Band of Creek Indians (PBCI) recently received the Helene Mosley Memorial TREASURE Forest Award for the South Region at the Alabama Natural Resources Council’s Awards Banquet, in Auburn, Alabama. 

This event recognizes forest owners who have shown exemplary dedication to the wise stewardship of natural resources.  Dr. James Shepard, Auburn University Dean and Professor of the School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences presented James W. (Billy) Smith, PBCI Tribal Elder and Manager of the Magnolia Branch Wildlife Reserve (MBWR); and Keith Martin, Tribal Council Member, with a plaque, a certificate, and a limited edition painting.

Blue Ocean Film Festival on Tour

Join us March 21st through the 23rd and dive into the world of conservation. Three days of free film screenings, as well as talks by renowned filmmakers and conservationists. Full schedules of events, talks and film screenings are available on our Facebook fan page.

Join Jean-Michele Cousteau, Chris Welsh and film making siblings Rob and Laura Sams for talks and films. The Plastic Coalition will also be present to talk about things we all can do to reduce plastic pollution.

Film Screenings include “My Father the Captain,” Minds in the Water,” “Stories from the Gulf” and “Ocean Planet.”

AWF Outdoor Classroom grants application deadline coming up!

The Alabama Wildlife Federation’s Outdoor Classroom (OC) Grant Program provides financial and technical assistance to schools enrolled in the Alabama Outdoor Classroom Program that wish to create effective and sustainable outdoor classroom sites on their school grounds.

The application deadline is March 8th!

Create your next Outdoor Learning Station, Activity Kit, and/or Educational Signs using an AWF OC Grant!  Grants are available up to $500.
