McMillan advises horse owners to vaccinate for EEE and West Nile Virus

Agriculture & Industries Commissioner John McMillan announced that since June, several positive cases of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) have been found in Alabama in birds and horses.

“We are entering into the time of year that makes us extremely vulnerable to the spread of mosquito-borne viruses and we need to protect our livestock and ourselves” stated McMillan. “I want to encourage horse owners to vaccinate their horses for both EEE and West Nile Virus as soon as possible.”

AUBURN, AL (WSFA) - At least four people are being tested for rabies after a stray kitten turned into the Lee County Humane Society was determined to be infected.

Auburn Animal Control Officers went to pick up a stray kitten called in by a resident. The animal was taken to the Lee County Humane Society where it was determined to have rabies.

Animal Control Officers are now attempting to locate the mother of the kitten and any possible liter mates so they can be tested, too.

At least one person at the humane society was bitten by the infected kitten. That person, as well as four others who were scratched, are being tested by the health department.

The Department of Agriculture and Industries Food Safety inspectors continue to conduct effectiveness checks on several varieties of pet food that have been recalled after Salmonella was detected during retail surveillance sampling. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been collaborating with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and state and local officials to investigate a multi-state outbreak of Salmonella Infantis infections. A total of 14 individuals infected with the outbreak strain have been reported from nine states.

Auburn, Ala. - Calling all dog lovers! Auburn Parks and Recreation will host the first-ever Responsible Dog Ownership Day at Kiesel Park on Saturday, March 24 from 9 a.m. - noon. This event is FREE and open to all dog owners and their favorite four-legged friends. Visit a variety of educational booths, shop with local pet vendors, and much more.

Pet owners can learn all about dog first aid and dental care. On-site rabies shot and microchip clinics will be offered for a nominal fee, as well as information and bookings for low-cost spay and neuter options from the Fix-it Wagon. Representatives from Auburn University's College of Veterinary Medicine will be available to share tips and expertise on keeping your pet happy and healthy.

The Lee County Humane Society's 2012 Best Friends Calendar is now for sale at the shelter.  The calendar is sponsored by Delta Zeta Sorority, cost $10 and can be picked up at the shelter or at one of the many supporting businesses and veterinary practices.  Proceeds form the calendar benefit the animals at the shelter.

Auburn, Ala. - Kiesel Park is going to the dogs! Join the Lee County Humane Society (LCHS) for Woofstock 2011 on Saturday, Aug. 27 from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. at Kiesel Park. Woofstock is a celebration for Lee County residents and their pets and includes live entertainment, a children’s fun area, and activities for you and your four-legged friend to enjoy. New this year, don't miss a hawk release by the Southeastern Raptor Center. A brief presentation by staff members from the Raptor Center will begin at 9:40 a.m., followed by the release of hawks into the wild.
